Recently an opportunity came across my desk.
I asked the other person what their deadline was for the next step. Wednesday after next.
Two days before the deadline, I still hadn't done the work to figure out whether it was a worthwhile opportunity.
Oh well, I'll just tell them that we're busy right now, and it's not a good time. Thanks but no thanks.
I was defaulting to "no," without even giving this opportunity the time of day.
It's easier to not do the work and say no then it is to do the work required to say yes.
What if the default response was YES instead of NO?
Default Yes puts the onus on you to find compelling reasons not to do something new.
And since most of us (hopefully) aren't willing to commit our organizations to a bad deal, Default Yes requires that we do the work, open our eyes, and if the conditions are right - take the leap.
I just called the person who reached out to us, and asked if we could extend the deadline so that we could really take the time to understand this opportunity. She agreed.
It would have been easy to just say no, and often no is the right answer.
But don't be the one who misses that life- or organization-changing YES simply because you're "busy." Default to Yes.
